Personal Coaching with Positive Psychology: A positive alternative to therapy The difference between coaching and therapy is that coaching is a form of behavioural mentoring focused on what you want to achieve in your life and is future-oriented. Counselling and therapy are, on the other hand, a means to emotional understanding of past difficulty and progress towards an absence of that difficulty. However the absence of depression etc is not the same as the presence of contentment and satisfaction with life. What positive psychology adds to the mix is in its ability to help people past that point of absence of ill-being into the presence of well-being. As well as positive psychology, I use a range of other techniques in coaching sessions. This includes Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), the toolbox of applied psychology techniques. I did my training with John Seymour Associates in Bristol. I also draw on hypnotherapy, transactional analysis and meditation. In the last few years I have been impressed with the effectiveness of the new "energy psychology" therapies such as EFT the emotional freedom techniques and Psych-k which changes beliefs at a subconscious level. I now incorporate both of these therapies into my practice. Coaching sessions can be on the phone, Skype or online. I also coach people within organisations and at my practice in Bristol.
